Yeah Baby Goods Art Call: Winner and Licensing Results for Our Creative Design Brief Members

Cue the fanfare and let the celebration begin! 🎉 We’ve just concluded our latest ART CALL in collaboration with the beloved brand, Yeah Baby Goods, and the outcomes have been absolutely extraordinary!

We’re over the moon to celebrate the achievements of our Brief community members. With this latest initiative, we’ve seen a total of 5 of our talented members have their designs licensed through these Art Calls, a testament to the incredible opportunities these events provide.

This time around, Yeah Baby Goods had the tough task of selecting from nearly 200 outstanding submissions, with 10 designs advancing to the final voting round. This speaks volumes about the quality and appeal of your creations! And for those who weren’t selected this time, remember, your efforts have contributed significantly to your growth. My top tip as a Surface Pattern Designer is to stay consistent with your work by using a set schedule. Break your tasks into manageable chunks, prioritise your job lists, and always seek a wide variety of inspiration.

Q: How can I manage my time better when creating artwork?

Are you overwhelmed with the balancing act of creating art and managing your time effectively? It’s a common challenge for artists, but the solution might be simpler than you think. Here are some strategies that can help your creative workflow:

  • Set a Schedule: It’s not glamorous but setting a schedule for yourself that you stick to can be a game-changer to managing your time, being productive, and creating more art. Do you feel most inspired in the morning, maybe it’s mid afternoon, or maybe you’re a night owl? Figure out what time works best for you, then give yourself a minimum amount of time each day to work on your art. Maybe it’s only 5 minutes, maybe it’s 20 but set the minimum so it feels insanely easy to achieve and then make it non-negotiable.
  • Eliminate Distractions: This can be easier said than done to try to eliminate any distractions that you can that could take away from your focus during your art making time. Turn off your phone, put on some headphones, and get to work.
  • Take Breaks: Sometimes we’re in the flow and hours can go by before we realize it but taking regular breaks can help you stay energized and motivated while you’re creating art. Allow yourself a few minutes here and there to take a break, stretch, or grab a snack. It’s also a great time to step back and reflect on what you’re creating.
  • Schedule Your Challenges: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, break down your collection or project into smaller, manageable tasks. When you break them down into smaller tasks it is not as overwhelming & you can tackle them in smaller time slots.

Creative Brief Tip – Find Your Treasure in the Mood Board

When you receive a new moodboard in your Monthly Creative Brief, you’re handed the key to unlock a treasure trove of ideas. But how can you make the most of this resource?

1. Visual Exploration

A moodboard is a work of art in itself. It’s a careful curation of images, colors, textures, and ideas. Take your time to immerse yourself in it. Let your eyes wander, and see what captures your attention. Is it the intricate patterns that draw you in, or perhaps the vibrant color combinations that pique your interest? Maybe it’s the unique style in which an element is depicted that intrigues you. 

2. Colors: The Palette of Emotions

Colors are the palette of emotions. Each hue has its own story to tell.  Colors can convey mood, evoke memories, and create a sense of unity in your design. Take note of the colours that catch your eye and resonate with you; they hold the key to establishing the emotional tone of your design.

3. Your Creative Flow

Moodboards are not just a collection of images; they are your companions on the creative journey. Paying attention to what you are naturally drawn to in a moodboard is the secret to unlocking your creativity. It provides direction and inspiration when you need it most.

Moodboards are indeed a treasure trove of visual inspiration. They serve as the compass. The patterns, colors, and styles within these visual guides are your allies, helping you navigate what to create each month. So, next time you receive a a new brief with a new  moodboard, don’t rush through it; take your time to explore, listen to your instincts, and let your creativity flow. Artist Spotlight Ilinca Maican

Ilinca Maican is an architect, who loves to draw and to paint. She likes to figure out systems and patterns in what surrounds her.

She channels most of her imagination and longing for communication through drawing.

She likes when colors do their thing so she is a big fan of watercolor and mediums that mix.

The Creative Brief is very nicely structured and offers flexibility and anchor points.

Working with Mini Collections of 3-4 prints is an approach I appreciate and enjoy – it’s enough to set up a mood and cover the bases.

I also love the Art Calls. It’s very nice to know what someone is actually looking for.

With the creative briefs, I go for the colours or for the theme which most appeals to me. Sometimes I love them all and I feel like doing everything at once.

I also cross check what I have done in my designs and collections with the Round Table talks and I try to make a check list from there.

If I’m not inspired on the moment, I just print the Brief, and browse them all at least once a month.
