Artist Spotlight Nikki Phyllis

Nikki is the creative behind Kitten Lane, a little design studio nestled in the Brisbane Valley, Australia.

She draws inspiration from nature, her rural childhood, and her daily adventures with her two small children.

Nikki is often drawn to soft and dreamy colour palettes and creating with relaxed, cosy interiors in mind.

I love the concept of creating a mini collection. Each Monthly Creative Brief has an on trend theme and colour palette which provides me with a clear focus each month.

I love that all the research on design trends has already been done, so I can just jump in and start creating, which is a great help when I’m also juggling two little ones.

The art calls are also an awesome bonus!

My Top Tip:

I like to mull things over for a couple of weeks first and also pin anything that catches my eye. Quite often I will start seeing the brief’s theme pop up in different places or see something that will spark a new idea.

My design process tends to be 95% thinking about the concept and 5% actually designing it

Studio Chat: The Power of

Batch Working

Hey there, Artists!  In our latest Studio Chat we dive into all the details of batch working.  Batch Working is a  game-changer that has truly transformed the way we approach daily tasks with incredible results!

As creatives and entrepreneurs we often have our heads in so many different places. We’re trying to responds to emails, fix our website, keep our socials up to date, oh, and create!

Can I ask you a quick question, just to make sure you’re in the right place? How many tabs do you have open on your computer right now? Most of us will have at least five! So how can we get through all these tasks and stay on track?

By tackling one thing at a time. We cannot overstate the importance of this work practice and if you give this a try, we promise the results will be amazing!

Our favourite benefit of Batch Working though, is the concept of buying back time. By adopting batch working and scheduling, you will find yourself feeling lighter, as if a weight has been lifted off your shoulders, and you will be more in control of your time.

To those who haven’t embraced batch working yet, we urge you to give it a try. The efficiency and mental clarity it brings are truly remarkable. Creative Brief Tip – Think like a Buyer

As a creative professional, you may often find yourself in a whirlwind of ideas, trying to create eye-catching designs and captivating content. One way to create the designs that capture art directors’ approval is to “think like a buyer.” This approach involves diving deep into creative briefs, deciphering what art directors are looking for, and drawing inspiration from real-life market trends.

Creative briefs are act as your compass, providing invaluable insights into current market trends and directions. They’re a treasure trove of information. By utilizing your creative brief, you can align your creative work with the expectations of art directors.

What makes creative briefs even more powerful is their connection to current market trends. Our briefs include examples of real-life products that exemplify the month’s theme. By analyzing these examples and paying attention to what’s working in the market, you gain a competitive advantage – you get a glimpse of what’s resonating with consumers right now.

To think like a buyer, start by dissecting the creative brief. Dive into the market examples provided. What elements make these products and designs successful? Is it a certain color palette, a storytelling technique, or a unique visual style?

Now, apply these insights to your creative brief. By infusing your work with the magic of current market trends, you increase the likelihood of capturing the attention of art directors.

In the ever-evolving landscape of creative content, thinking like a buyer and embracing the guidance provided by our Portfolio Building Monthly Design Briefs can set you on a path to creating content that stands and is exactly what art directors are looking for.

Studio Tips How do I use Social Media to Help me Promote my Work?

Studio Tips How do I use Social Media to Help me Promote my Work?

Q: How can I use social media to help me promote my work?

How effectively are you using social media to promote your art? Are you leveraging the power of hashtags, engaging with your audience, and showcasing your work in a way that truly reflects your creative identity? Mastering social media is not just about posting regularly—it’s about making meaningful connections and using strategic approaches to ensure your artwork gets the visibility it deserves.
1. Create and share content: Create content that is interesting, relevant, and engaging to your target audience.
2. Use hashtags: Hashtags can help your content reach a wider audience. Use relevant hashtags to make your content easier to find.
3. Engage with your audience: Respond to comments, engage in conversations, and ask relevant questions to build relationships with your audience. Don’t neglect the community who is already engaging with you and your content!
4. Join communities: Find and participate in relevant online communities to build relationships. We naturally like to share, and promote our friends. Find your friends by being a friend.
4. Utilize your community: Liking, commenting, sharing others work that you love, or sharing your friends work can be a great way for them to not only notice you but want to reciprocate the love.
6. Share your work: Use social media as an extension of your portfolio. Clients, buyers, and art directors are all on social media. What do you want them to see when they stumble upon your social media. Let it be a reflection of who you are and the work you create.
7. Advertise: Utilize online advertising platforms to reach a wider audience. Also just talk about what you have new out in the world! Be your biggest cheerleader. Don’t be scared to promote your services or your work & then do it again and again.
8. Analyze results: Monitor and track your results to understand what’s working and what’s not. Make adjustments as needed.

Navigating social media to promote your artwork can be as creative a process as the art-making itself. But, if you’re looking to dive deeper and develop a strategic approach that not only showcases your work but also builds a solid, engaging portfolio, our Monthly Portfolio Building Creative Design Briefs are here to guide you. Each brief is crafted to help you refine your social media presence, enhance your portfolio, and connect with your ideal audience on a deeper level.
