Artist SpotlightSina O'Keeffe

Sina is a surface pattern designer and illustrator from the tropical Top End of Australia.

She draws inspiration from nature, plants and wildlife around her, as well memories from her childhood home of Germany.

While out for a walk with her husband and two dogs, you can often spot her taking snaps of “inspo” ready for the next pattern.

I am getting so much joy and value out of the briefs. They provide me with inspiration, guidance and a starting point to create some art.

It helps me to embrace making smaller collections on a more regular basis. At the same time I am not just improving my pattern skills and growing my library – I have also finally started my email list!

I had been holding off on it for ages, because I thought “what am I going to write about every month?”. Now I send out one newsletter a month where I share my mini collection of the month and a little freebie screen saver with one of the patterns.

This keeps me motivated and accountable without being overwhelming.

I like to read and digest all the brief material at the beginning of the month and then just sit with it for a while. If some ideas immediately pop into my head, I will note them down or make a quick sketch.

I also love to quiz my friends and colleagues, like “Hey, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about spring?” They are like my real life Pinterest board of inspiration and the variety of ideas and responses really gets my creative juices flowing.

They also add an element of accountability, because now they are invested too and they want to see you make that pattern about tulips…or spring rolls, haha!

She just finished the Immersion course by Bonnie Christine during which she created her first mini-collection; ‘Life in the seaside’.

I love how well Creative Studio Collective Design Briefs are structured and how beautifully all of the inspiration boards are put together.

I also love having different perspectives to approach a theme.

My top tip, especially if you are just starting out, is to start small so that you don’t get stuck in the overwhelm. Once you get started you will find that the design process  flows by itself.

Rianne is an artist and designer from The Netherlands.

Inspired by her love for travelling, thrift stores and her hobby of sewing clothes with beautiful fabrics, she now designs fabric for other makers and brands.

She loves infusing a sense of nostalgia and whimsy into her patterns by combining modern aesthetics with vintage inspiration.

The Portfolio Building Creative Briefs are so inspiring and professional!

My favourite part of them are the moodboards and motif examples because they instantly spark so many design ideas. I always feel inspired and I can immediately dive into designing.

My tip for Surface Pattern Designers is this: while designing your hero and coordinating prints, pull little motifs aside to create blender prints with.

Those extra blender prints aren’t necessarily designs you need to add to your collection sell sheet, but they are perfect for uploading onto Spoonflower!

The Portfolio Building Creative Briefs have helped me to create a well rounded portfolio.

I now have themes and collections that I would never have created. They help me break through the resistance I have to certain themes and seasons because I know someone else out there is doing it too!

My tip for working with the briefs is to start with the pattern that will be the easiest or quickest to construct. Start with the easy win and build from there. Its so much easier and less overwhelming to build a mini collection when I start from the easiest or most simple pattern first.

Spoonflower X Creative Studio Collective Lake Life Challenge Results

Hey there, friends! We’re bursting with excitement as we reveal the winners of the Spoonflower X Creative Studio Collective Lake Life Challenge. This collaboration has been an absolute blast, and we couldn’t be happier to share the results with you all!

But first things first, we want to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to each and every one of you who participated in this challenge. Your passion and creativity left us absolutely awestruck. It was a delightful experience to witness the diverse interpretations of the challenge and the brief. We were genuinely blown away by your talents, and we mean it when we say that selecting the winners was no easy task. Hours of review and careful consideration were poured into this, and we consider it a true honor.

Now, without further ado, let’s dive into the winners!

First Place: Byre Wilde Studio

We’re kicking things off with our first-place winner, and let us tell you, it was love at first sight when we stumbled upon Byre Wilde Studio’s design. Out of the top 100 popular vote designs, this one shone the brightest in the Lake Life Challenge. Byre Wilde Studio’s creation not only captured our attention but also evoked a sense of nostalgia with its textured, woodcut printing-esque style.

Their design masterfully encapsulates the mood, the ambiance, and the very essence of life by the lake. It’s a dynamic yet familiar piece that has us daydreaming about its potential on everything, from wallpaper to adorable children’s wear, cozy bedding, and charming throw pillows. Second Place: Wolfing Blue

Coming in strong at second place in the popular vote is the beautiful design by Wolfing Blue. Prepare to be captivated by this design, as it is a landscape of meticulously crafted, discoverable details that will leave you enchanted.

Wolfing Blue has demonstrated an extraordinary ability to tell a visual story, all while expertly employing the suggested color palette from the Lake Life brief. The technical repeat in this design flows seamlessly, whether it’s showcased on a grand scale or a more intimate one, making it a versatile and adaptable print. You can find her design here.

AND A TIE FOR THIRD PLACE…

 

Third Place: Studio Xtine

Studio Xtine has claimed a well-deserved spot in third place with their impeccable geometric design that simply demands your attention. This design is an absolute home run!

What truly sets this creation apart is the flawless execution, from the bold color palette that pops to the ingenious placement of motifs. The exquisite texture woven into the design adds a layer of depth and character that’s impossible to overlook. We can already envision this print gracing a wide variety of products, from the coziest bedding and stylish pajamas to lunchboxes that stand out and hammocks that beckon you to relax. Third Place: Prira J Design

In a tie for third place, Prira J Design has captivated us all with a truly stunning creation that demands your immediate attention. This design boasts a bold color palette that grabs hold of your gaze and refuses to let go.

What sets this design apart is the flawless fusion of beautiful storks, graceful cattails, and delicate florals. It’s a harmonious combination that feels just right. The technical repeat in this design flows seamlessly, showcasing the designer’s meticulous attention to detail. We can’t help but fall head over heels for this one. Find the design here.

Guess what? We’re diving back into the creative deep end with our trusty sketchbook a fresh set of gouache paints and new markers! That’s right, we’re embarking on a 100-day art challenge, and that is all about flexing our creative muscles and showing up consistently.

Get ready to join us! There’s something uniquely exciting about committing to a 100-day project, and it can be a bit nerve-racking at the same time.

Here are our six top reasons why you should jump in too:

  1. Small Steps, Big Results: Break that big, daunting artistic goal into manageable daily steps. Whether it’s a doodle, a stroke of a brush, or a few lines on paper, those tiny efforts add up over time. Before you know it, you’ve accomplished something truly remarkable. It also helps you get over the fear of putting pen to paper. We encourage you to just create and see where it takes you.

  2. Supercharge Your Creativity: Think of a 100-day project as a turbo boost for your creative engine. By committing to creating something every day for a hundred days, you’ll be amazed at how your creative ideas start to flow more freely. It’s like a daily workout for your imagination!
